His academic background includes mathematics education, cartography, and computational mathematics. As a senior research fellow at the Alfréd Rényi Institute of Mathematics, he heads the Department of Mathematics Education Methodology. His main area of interest is discovery-based mathematics teaching — that is, how to teach mathematics not as the tedious, frustrating memorisation of recipes, but as independent thinking through exciting, engaging problems.
